June 30, 2005 North Truro, Mass.Fields Publishing today announced the
release of its latest title, "Carnival-Provincetown"a fanciful, digital
look at Provincetown's annual August parade down Commercial Street. The
hardcover collectible features 94 eclectic images taken from 2001 through
2004 by Outer Cape photographer Charles Fields.
A collection of festive, colorful and outrageous photographs celebrating Carnival, this unique work is punctuated by images of wild street costumes, drag bingo, curious spectators, familiar local faces, and guest "appearances" by parade participants from around the country including Key West, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. Based on record attendance over recent years, Carnival continues to hold magic for so many a fact that inspired Fields Publishing to convey the experience through vibrant master photography within a storybook-like context.
"We worked to create a fun layout that captures the feel and frivolity of the event. At times, it's irreverent but it definitely conveys the spirit of the parade," says publisher and photographer Charles Fields. "You can't put it down, namely because there¹s a surprise at every turn of the page."
The whimsical work is accompanied by a narrative text written by former Provincetown resident Gerry Desautels. The 10"x10" "story book" retails for $24.95. "The text is a mélange of my impressions of Carnival from a local perspective, but there's also a good chunk of historic details relating to the evolution of what's become one of the largest summer events on Cape Cod," according to Desautels. "The annual event, first begun in 1977, is one of a few where townies and tourists, gay and straight, bond in celebration."
"Carnival-Provincetown" is a departure for Fields more serious signature coffee-table art photography books. His previous titles on "Provincetown and the National Seashore" and "Cape Cod and the National Seashore" almost immediately became classics when released over the past few years.
