Vieques by Charles Fields

Provincetown, Massachusetts, April 19, 2008 -- Vieques and the National Wildlife Refuge: A Photographic Essay by Charles is slated for release October 30, 2008. Vieques will mark the third in a series of the coffee table-format books by Fields, already in national distribution, following the highly-acclaimed Provincetown and the National Seashore: A Photographic Essay by Charles Fields (2002) and Cape Cod and the National Seashore: A Photographaphic Essay by Charles Fields (2003).

Vieques, located off the east coast of Puerto Rico, is considered one of the Carribean's best kept secrets. After more than 60 years of U.S. military occupation, using the tranquil Carribean island for target practice and occupying more than two-thirds of the Island, the United States Navy left Vieques on May 1, 2003. The land they left behind was turned over to the U.S. Interior Department, and is now managed under the direction of the US Fish and Wildlife Service as the largest Wildlife Refuge in the Caribbean. leaf

"Now that the Navy is out, the Island has been completely opened up", says photographer Charles Fields from his Provincetown publishing office. Theres not only the natural beauty (of the Island), Fields says, -- "its the last unspoiled paradise in all of the Carribean. But , along with the hundreds of bunkers and signs of the pre-war games and training, theres the life of a people", says Fields. "I feel its some of my best work".

Fields is already in final production of the book, laying out the 144 pages of brilliant, full-color photography across the walls of his office and studio. The Vieques book will follow the general layout and design of his popular Provincetown and Cape Cod books, but Fields plans to add more informational captions and historical perspective to Vieques, as well as produce the book in a bilingual, English-Spanish format.
